What Is Juvéderm?
Juvederm is a dermal filler injected under the skin to create fullness and contours in a youthful shape. Hyaluric acid, an acid found naturally in the human body, is the component of Juvederm that makes the product work so well. Juvederm contains non-animal hyaluric acid that is compatible with human hyaluric acid. The product is cross-linked which means that the composition of Juvederm is a gel that is not absorbed by the body as with liquid hyaluric acid. Juvederm was introduced into the US market as a competitor for another dermal filler manufactured from bovine hyaluric acid. Juvederm provided better results without the animal based collagen filler components. Today you can get Juvederm all over Chicago.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Juvederm is injected into the mid to deep layer of the dermis, instantly providing a plumper, fuller look. A a gel it lasts longer than liquid hyaluric acid that would be metabolized by the body. Juvederm binds with water molecules in the skin to help the fullness last. The hyaluric molecules also bind with collagen and elastins in the skin. Collagen is the component that helps skin look younger and elastins move nutrients to the skin. Collagen is less likely to break down and the fillers help stretch cells in a way that causes them to create more of the body’s own collagen.
IS JUVEDERM LIKE BOTOX?
No. Both products are injected into the skin, but Juvederm does not contain toxins. Juvederm does not affect facial muscles. The product sits under the skin, giving a plump, youthful look. Juvederm’s composition is similar to the body’s natural hyaluric acids. The results from Juvederm act on a different time scale and last longer than Botox.
CAN JUVEDERM BE USED WITH BOTOX?
Yes. Juvederm and Botox can be used together. The injections are different compositions and act differently in the body.
WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?
Results are visible right away. Since Juvederm is a gel, it provides new fullness under wrinkles or sagging skin. Where some injections with other products may takes days to give results, Juvederm is nearly instant.
HOW LONG WILL THE RESULTS LAST?
The results from Juvederm may last up to ten months. Every individual is different, so the metabolization of the gel could be faster or slower for some. Patients are encouraged to discuss an injection regimen with their doctor.
WHO CAN USE JUVEDERM?
Almost anyone that has deep wrinkles or lines on their face. Sagging skin can be filled in places, regaining that youthful appearance. Of course, patients that have had allergic reactions to certain medications like lidocaine, and are at risk for other reactions, should discuss their allergies with their doctor. While reactions are rare, there are risks for people that have had previous severe allergic reactions. Women who are pregnant or nursing should not have any cosmetic injections, nor should people on blood thinning medication, as they could bleed at the injection site(s). Most people do not need an allergy test before injection.
WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS?
The most common side effects are bruising and swelling. More serious side effects are rare but can occur in patients with a history of immune disorders or allergic reactions to medications and certain bacteria. The effects include lumping of the skin, severe swelling and bruising, or even anaphylaxis (a life threatening allergic reaction). Most people will only experience limited bruising and swelling.
